Interpretation of the latest UL 1598 standard

On August 28, 2018, UL Standard 1598 (STANDARD FOR SAFETY Luminaires) was officially updated to the 4th edition.
The changes in the new standard are mainly reflected in the three aspects of wardrobe lamp requirements, plastic enclosure requirements, and label font size.

Wardrobe lamp requirements
☑ The light source can be a fluorescent lamp or LED;
☑ Test requirements: In the temperature rise test, it is necessary to cover the exposed surface of the lamp with Glassfiber to simulate the state of clothing coverage. In addition to the standard requirements, the temperature rise cannot exceed 90°.


Changes in plastic enclosure requirements
■ The requirement of ordinary lamp housing still needs 5VA.
■ For LED products, the lens or diffuser that acts as a shell, if the distance from the charged part is more than 0.8mm, the rubber compound can be reduced to V-0.
5.7.1.3 An LED lens or diffuser that serves as an enclosure where all live parts areinsulated or spaced more than 0.8 mm (0.032 in) from the lens or diffuser shall have a minimum V-0 flammability rating or comply with the V-0 flame test ofClause 17.26 and shall comply with the minimum flammability requirement inClause 5.7.1.2 (b) through (d).


Label font size change
★ The height requirement of the commonly used Label logo font is reduced from the original 2.4mm to 1.6mm;
★ There was no font requirement for the font of S16, but now it stipulates the following:
